Current Event 2: Science

It seems like scientists are trying everything. A new study is testing if people would be able able to make tiny, bird-shaped surveillance robots. They cannot, however, because birds use a swirling flow like how you would row a boat. The way we would do it was that since we use a streamlined flow of air, like from a jet, we would not be able to match that form of flight. Matthew Ringuette, an assistant professor from the University of Buffalo UB, conducted research to measure the velocity and forces at the vortex formation. The models shown in the images at the bottom showed that the models can produce at larger scales the vortex formation that birds, insects, and some fish use.

I can see how this would be thought about and how it would be studied like this. I don't quite understand how birds that flap their wings super-fast like a Hummingbird could use the vortex formation. If you would like more information about this article, go to this site.
